About the IRMS

About Us

The Information and Records Management Society (IRMS) is the leading professional association for all those engaged in the management, governance or use of information. Established for over 30 years and with a clear commitment to inclusivity across the profession, IRMS now has 1000 members (individual and corporate) in over 30 countries worldwide and in all sectors of the business world - including public and private. 

Membership is open to all and its membership rates are intended to be accessible to all - with annual individual membership set at £80 and Corporate Membership a modest £350. Our membership fees have been fixed for a number of years to ensure they remain affordable in these financially challenging times. Retired professionals can join for half price, and student membership is free!

What is information and records management?

Information and records management (also referred to as 'records management') is the collective term for the procedures by which an organisation manages, controls and uses its information assets.  It covers information and records in all media and relates to how information is gathered, processed, stored, accessed, used, shared and, ultimately, when and how it is either permanently preserved or destroyed. Information Governance is a facet of information and records management, as are business processes improvement and knowledge management.

Our Mission

To provide leadership in information and records management with the aims of:

  •  Championing the status of information and records management through representation, external liaison & promotion
  •  Supporting professional development through sharing knowledge and expertise;
  •  Promoting all aspects of good information and records management practice.

To do this, the Society supports and promotes activity across the profession - everything from group events to publishing a professional magazine 6 times a year - as well as being active in advocacy for the profession and engaging in mutually-beneficial collaborations with other organisations for the benefit of both our membership and the wider profession.

Our Current Strategy

We are currently working along a 3 tier programme of projects under the banners of Membership, Commercial and Communications. This programme of work started in summer 2016 and we have already started to deliver and see returns on our investments. Not least, the delivery of our new website which went live in May 2017. This new platform allows members to engage with others and the Society in new ways and allows us to respond quickly to member needs - be that for more content, more events or more services. 

How we are governed

As a 'not-for-profit' membership organisation everything the IRMS does is governed by our Constitution and standing orders. Each volunteer agrees to be bound by them and they give the Society structure and direction.Our volunteers are led locally by their Group Chairs & committees, and nationally by the IRMS Executive made up of Officers, Directors and the 4 Constitutional roles (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer).
